Volunteering At The Stables
The Stables has over 250 volunteers who generously give up their time to cover many areas of the operation, including front-of-house ushering, bar and shop service, sound and lighting, marketing, education and programming administration. Some of the volunteers, known as Stablemates, have been with the organisation since its early days, but there is also a frequent influx of new people eager to play their part in The Stables’ history.
Stablemates receive an initial induction into the organisation, which provides an insight into all areas of the operation, and must commit to carry out at least four voluntary sessions every month. Sessions include many different activities such as stewarding at concerts, directing traffic in the car park, working behind the bar, helping with follow-spot lights, or stuffing envelopes with brochures to mail to customers. Work shadowing takes place, followed by training in particular areas such as the bar, shop and backstage areas. Once a suitable role is found for the individual in question, they become part of the regular team and monthly rotas are distributed to each volunteer.
But it’s not all hard work! Stablemates are rewarded with social events and tokens that they can collect and use in part payment for tickets. And of course every event brings its own unique form of entertainment for the volunteers!
