Prokofiev Quintet Op.39, Martinu Nonet, Schumann Piano Quintet in E flat Op.44

A programme of unjustly neglected works! Prokofiev’s Quintet was commissioned for a circus-themed ballet called Trapeze and is quirky, fun and not to be taken too seriously. Martinu’s Nonet looks back to some of his inspirations; the music of Haydn and the tunes of his Czech homeland. Schumann’s Piano Quintet is widely acknowledged as one of the favourite works in the genre. Two days after completing it he started writing his Op.47 piano quartet, yet the two works could not be more different
