This affable duo were recently acclaimed for their programme of ballads and jazz standards by a local audience. Altoist Matt Wates’s jazz experience belies his years and he is probably best known as leader of a longstanding sextet that includes the likes of Martin Shaw and Leon Greening and which features convivial modern jazz, much of it written and arranged by himself. His fluent and lyrical style of playing has been likened to Cannonball Adderley and Paul Desmond. At home on piano or Hammond organ, Mike Gorman is most familiar as a key figure in Jim Mullen's 'The Organ Trio' whose credentials include accompanying Scott Hamilton at the Brecon Jazz Festival.
